End those awkward pauses with one quick and easy phrase–
Watch this 2-minute video to learn the open-ended conversation starters that will give you the confidence to start right in talking to the stranger you just met or the teacher you admire, or the girl two bar-stools over, or the friend you’d like to get to know, or the customer with whom you’d like to form a connection. Remember–people aren’t born with communication skills; communication skills are learned and developed and nurtured. People who appear to be “naturally good” communicators are invariably more practiced than the rest of us–or they learned from their parents–or they learned from watching others. The operative word here is “learned.” And learning never stops, as you’ll see when you watch this video and say to yourself: “Simple–why didn’t I think of that?”
Most people think that a question–any question–is a good conversation starter, but they’re wrong. A closed-ended question can put a damper on conversation, particularly if you address the question to a left-brainer–a techie–or just a person who is introverted and possibly shy.
You say: “Where are you from?”
He/she says: “Fargo, ND.”
Uhhhhhh, then what? How about “Hmmmm, cold there, huh?” which will elicit a “yep” from most Fargoans (of which Dan is one 🙂 ). The question was not one of those “conversation starters.” It was just an awkward question that led to an embarrassing pause. Sound familiar? Many of us ask those questions all the time and then say to ourselves: “Hmmmm, I thought asking questions was a good way to start a conversation; all I’m getting are one-word answers–and the brush-off.”
